Flemington sits in Flemington Borough — the county seat of Hunterdon County, a compact borough of about one square mile surrounded on all sides by Raritan Township.
Housing stock. A great deal of 19th century housing, much of it inside the borough's National Register historic district, alongside 20th century infill and recent redevelopment near the centre.
Water supply. The borough is largely served by a public supply, so the well-water route that comes up constantly in the rural townships is not usually part of the picture inside the borough line — though it very often is a few hundred feet outside it.
Flemington sits on the Passaic Formation — the red shale and mudstone of the Newark Basin —. Shale of this kind carries modest uranium but fractures readily, and it is the fracture network rather than the rock's own richness that moves soil gas toward a foundation. What makes Flemington distinctive is the housing: a great deal of it predates 1900, which in practice means shallow cellars, stone and early brick foundations, floors poured over earlier surfaces, and party-wall and near-party-wall construction on the tighter streets. Those are the conditions where sealing does measurable work and where the discharge route has to be worked out carefully, because on a narrow borough lot the roofline of the next house may be closer than the requirements allow for.
None of that describes a particular property. Formations cross municipal boundaries freely, so where a specific address falls is a question for the NJ Geological Survey's bedrock mapping, and what it means under the floor is a question for a diagnostic test.
Around Flemington. The requests come from the Main Street historic district and the county courthouse block; the Broad Street and Bonnell Street residential streets; Turntable Junction and the Stangl Road area; the Route 12 and Route 31 approaches; the Church Street and Park Avenue neighbourhoods.
Small, close-set lots with houses near the street. Side access is often narrow and pipe routing has to be planned rather than assumed.
Flemington jobs are rarely large, but they are often fiddly. Old cellars take longer to seal, interior routing through a 19th century house is genuinely difficult, and on some streets the only compliant discharge point is the one that costs most to reach. Newer infill and the redeveloped blocks near the centre, by contrast, install like any modern house.
Flemington is barely a square mile and is surrounded entirely by Raritan Township, so an address a few hundred feet outside the borough line is on a different water supply, a different construction office, and often a completely different foundation type.
The Flemington Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, and it covers much of the borough's oldest housing. That raises a question few other addresses in Hunterdon face: how a radon discharge pipe is routed and finished on a historically significant street frontage.
Permits go through the Flemington Borough construction office. A substantial part of the borough falls within its historic district, so exterior work — including where a discharge pipe runs and what it is finished in — can attract additional review, and that is a conversation worth having before the pipe route is fixed.
Confirm the jurisdiction before the paperwork starts. Addresses in this part of the county routinely sit in a different municipality from the one they are posted to, and shared code services muddy it further.

NJDEP's figure is a cumulative count of test results in its dataset, not a count of distinct homes. These are municipality-wide totals and say nothing about any individual property — only a test does that.

Sealing the sump and drawing suction through an existing perimeter drain loop. Efficient where the drainage is already there.
A 48-hour closed-house test at the lowest lived-in level, placed and read by a New Jersey certified measurement business. The number everything else follows from.
Gasketed sump lids, sealed floor-wall joints, and closed slab penetrations. Rarely enough alone — but it makes the system that follows work properly.
