The re-test after a system goes in. Without it nobody knows whether the fan on the side of the house is doing anything at all.
It is one of the more common requests we route across Hunterdon County, NJ.
The situations this follows from
- The manometer beside the pipe is level when it should be offset
- A system was installed and nobody has confirmed it actually worked
- It has been two years since the last reading and the guidance says re-test
- The system was installed by a previous owner and there is no test on file
How it's normally done
A clearance test is run no sooner than 24 hours and no later than 30 days after the fan is switched on, under the same sealed-house conditions as the original. It is the only thing that proves the installation did what it was sold to do, and it should be done by someone other than whoever installed the system where that is practical.
Typical cost in Hunterdon County, NJ
$150 – $350 — typical range, not a quote. What your building needs can only be settled by a certified business that measures it on site.
New Jersey requires certification for this
Measurement is certified separately from mitigation. Under N.J.A.C. 7:28-27, testing for radon for a fee in New Jersey requires NJDEP certification as a radon measurement business. A crew certified to install systems is not thereby certified to place and read the detectors. We only route this work to businesses we have checked on the measurement side.
Reading the result
Never tested, and wondering whether to?
Write down what the system is doing and what the re-test said. We'll get it to crews who diagnose rather than guess.

The ground this belongs on
Only the ground where this is genuinely the right question — we do not generate a page for a service that makes no sense on a given bedrock.
Highlands ridge and limestone valley
Precambrian gneiss and granite of the Reading Prong, cut by carbonate valleys. The highest-potential ground in the county, and almost all of it on private wells.
Newark Basin shale country
Red shale and mudstone of the Passaic Formation under Flemington and the centre of the county. Fractured rock, plenty of basements, and a mix of public water and wells.
Diabase uplands and the Delaware corridor
Sourland-type diabase and the dark argillite of the Lockatong Formation. Stone farmhouses, open crawl spaces, and river-town cellars cut into rock.
